With the glorious autumn weather finally here and those scorching hot summer days behind us, I felt inspired to give my bedroom a fresh look but didn’t want to have to spend a lot.
A budget bedroom makeover is actually really fun and can be done in a few different ways. By keeping the basics of your room fairly neutral, it gives you the option of adding colour and texture with soft furnishings and décor accessories. Just as we girls paint our nails and add a bit of bling to add the finishing touches to our outfits, we can do the same by adding a throw rug, a pop of colour with some feature cushions, an oversized mirror leaning against a wall and a few well-placed décor accessories so you can transform your space as often as the seasons change!
In my bedroom, I have a white pin-tucked quilt cover, off white walls with neutral floor and window coverings. Having a neutral colour palette to work with means I can change the look and feel of my room simply by changing my cushions, swapping wall art and side lamps from one room to another and moving furniture around.
As you can see from the picture above, I’ve gone for an elegant and minimalistic look by using three different sized and patterned cushions from the Caitlin Wilson Gold Collection (we’ve got new stock arriving from the U.S. in a couple of weeks), along with a white fur pillow to add a bit of texture.
For a smart and sophisticated look, you could go for a neutral cushion in stone or plain grey and a subtle patterned cushion, then add the WOW factor with a feature cushion such as this gorgeous Studio Rings cushion by Issie Mae Designs. Alternatively, you can really have some fun by adding a few bright and quirky text cushions or message pillowcases, as pictured below.
Adding a colourful or textured throw will also help update the look and add some life to the room. Throws are so versatile – they can be positioned on top of your existing quilt, thrown ever-so-casually over the end of your bed, or draped artfully on a chair or ottoman.
Create ambiance with fragrant candles or a diffuser, or change your lampshades to bring a different colour and feel to the room. And don’t forget the décor – consider a change to your wall art, if you don’t have the funds to purchase a new print why not swap your wall art from one room to another.
Also, don’t forget to switch the ornaments on any shelving, and if you have enough space, add a bunch of flowers. We all know how much flowers can transform a room – and you might even be lucky enough to have access to a garden so they can be free, too! Otherwise, you can opt for a low maintenance indoor pot plant, which is a longer-term option that offers good value.
I hope this article has given you some great ideas and inspires you to give your bedroom a makeover!
PS. Stay tuned … I’ll be posting a sneak preview over the next few days of the gorgeous Kate Spade New York stationery range which is coming in-store in April.
